Five Simple Tips to Improve Your Website’s Design

When you commence to make a website for yourself, you of course want to use tools that will make the job easier, like WYSIWYG editors and Sitegrinder. However, it’s a good idea to read up on some main design principles if you’re just starting out, particularly if it is your first website. Happily, with web editing tools like Sitegrinder, it would also be easy to make changes and fix the mistakes that you make in terms of web design. SiteGrinder 2 can help you create your own website even if you’re not familiar with the basics. In the meantime, here are a few of the more basic things that all visitors look for in a stylish website:

  • Using scribbled font features, font color, and sizes. Your font must not just follow with the theme of your website excluding also be easy to read, or else your visitors won’t bother to try and read your site’s content.
  • Create a navigational menu that won’t puzzle your browsers. Ease of navigation is an essential part in encouraging your site’s visitors to travel around your site further. It’s also sensible to identify your navigational buttons with easy to understand and self-instructive labels.
  • Do rationalize your plan so it loads faster; don’t put insignificant spares like auto-loading audio or video. If you feel that, for some reason, you must comprise this on your website, at any rate put controls to it on a prominent place so they can put the music on pause. Keep your reader in mind always; in this condition, your reader might be performing his or her own music or the music you insert on your website might not be the kind that he or she appreciates listening to.
  • Help your readers easily find the content they need in your website lacking of necessitating to find their way around your advertisements. Certainly advertisements are sometimes inescapable because web masters need a way to forfeit their hosting bills. Keep your advertisements at a smallest amount and keep your readers coming back to your site.
  • Backgrounds with aggravating shades, patterns, or vibrant images. Animated gifs shouldn’t be used as surfaced backgrounds for the plain intention that it’s annoying and it’s hard on the eyes. Not all of your visitors would have enough patience to just ignore your background and converge on the subject of your site.

There are more designing principles that are considered best practices by production authority, but those above are the regular concerns about websites that visitors have. If you look at design principles personally, you’ll detect that they’re all built on the goal. How much campaign would you consider surplus? Is your content effortlessly available and does your lay out and navigation make it easier for people to know what they are looking for in your website? It gives readers a lovely experience, aside from the content of the site.

America Starts Here: Kate Ericson and Mel Ziegler

America Starts Here: Kate Ericson and Mel Ziegler

$10.7

During their decade-long collaboration (1985-1995), Kate Ericson and Mel Ziegler produced some of the most influential conceptual art projects of the time. Among their witty and stimulating installations and outdoor projects was Camouflaged History, a house painted in a U.S. Army-designed camouflage pattern using 72 commercial paint colors included in the municipally-approved “authentic colors” of historic Charleston, South Carolina. The commercial name of each paint, commemorating an aspect of the city’s history, is also painted on the house, revealing and illuminating the lingering Civil War-era past of the region. Like the Earthwork pioneers, Ericson and Ziegler took the whole country as their working space; but rather than impose a conspicuous work of art upon a site or situation, they devised projects that altered sites subtly, creating a patchwork of poetic narratives and histories to be excavated. The windows rescued from the old National Licorice factory in Philadelphia in the title piece America Starts Here-which takes its name from the slogan used to promote Pennsylvania tourism during the 1980s – are hung according to the location of the original windows in the factory; the cracks in the glass echo the famous cracks in two of Philadelphia’s tourist attractions, the Liberty Bell and Marcel Duchamp’s The Large Glass. Kate Ericson’s death from cancer in 1995 at age 39 made the body of Ericson and Ziegler’s collaborative work finite. America Starts Here offers a generous selection of Ericson and Ziegler’s work, with much of it reproduced in color, and provides a critical analysis of the artists’ still under-appreciated position in the history of twentieth-century art. It accompanies the first retrospective exhibition of Ericson and Ziegler’s work. Copublished with The Frances Young Tang Teaching Museum at Skidmore College and List Visual Arts Center at MIT.

Animating Culture

Animating Culture

$35.99

Long considered children’s entertainment by audiences and popular media, Hollywood animation has received little serious attention. Eric Smoodin’s Animating Culture is the first and only book to thoroughly analyze the animated short film. Usually running about seven or eight minutes, cartoons were made by major Hollywood studios – such as MGM, Warner Bros, and Disney – and shown at movie theaters along with a newsreel and a feature-length film. Smoodin explores animated shorts and the system that mass-produced them. How were cartoons exhibited in theaters? How did they tell their stories? Who did they tell them to? What did they say about race, class, and gender? How were cartoons related to the feature films they accompanied on the evening’s bill of fare? What were the social functions of cartoon stars like Donald Duck and Minnie Mouse? Smoodin argues that cartoons appealed to a wide audience – not just children – and did indeed contribute to public debate about political matters. He examines issues often ignored in discussions of animated film – issues such as social control in the U.S. army’s Private Snafu cartoons, and sexuality and race in the sites of Betty Boop’s body and the cartoon harem. His analysis of the multiple discourses embedded in a variety of cartoons reveals the complex and sometimes contradictory ways that animation dealt with class relations, labor, imperialism, and censorship. His discussion of Disney and the Disney Studio’s close ties with the U.S. government forces us to rethink the place of the cartoon in political and cultural life. Smoodin reveals the complex relationship between cartoons and the Hollywood studio system, and between cartoons and theiraudiences.

Applying Performance

Applying Performance

$37.1

Applying Performance, now available in paperback, offers new ways of thinking about contemporary performance, live art and applied theatre. The book features a range of examples of socially engaged and participatory practices, considering key questions and debates about how we value this kind of work, who it is for, what purposes it serves and its status as art. Challenging divisions between subject and object, process and performance, artist and spectator, theory and practice, mind and body, the book participates in the various theoretical turns to affect, ethics and cognition to consider how and why we are moved as partakers in performance, the importance of empathy and embodiment to critical and creative engagement and the role of play and pleasure in affective practice. Case studies include work in a range of institutional settings to include education, health care, museums and prisons as well as projects using performance in developing communities and cultures. The examples are considered in the context of contemporary performance with sections on auto/biography, space, site and place, digital cultures and participatory performance.

Sir Michael Checkland is also a Board member. The Centre is the successor to a previous project on the site, the Cardiff Bay Opera House. This was a plan, supported by the Cardiff Bay Development Corporation, to construct a permanent home for the Welsh National Opera. However, the project failed to win financial support from the Millennium Commission, the body which distributed funds from the UK National Lottery. An international design competition was established by the Cardiff Bay Opera House Trust to decide on the architect for the project. The competition would eventually be in two rounds. The first round of the competition attracted 268 international competitors. The list of architectural practices that took part in. More:

Being Watched: Yvonne Rainer and the 1960s

Being Watched: Yvonne Rainer and the 1960s

$21.95

In her dance and performances of the 1960s, Yvonne Rainer famously transformed the performing body – stripped it of special techniques and star status, traded its costumes and leotards for T-shirts and sneakers, asked it to haul mattresses or recite texts rather than leap or spin. Without discounting these innovations, Carrie Lambert-Beatty argues in Being Watched that the crucial site of Rainer’s interventions in the 1960s was less the body of the performer than the eye of the viewer – or rather, the body as offered to the eye. Rainer’s art, Lambert-Beatty writes, is structured by a peculiar tension between the body and its display. Through close readings of Rainer’s works of the 1960s – from the often-discussed dance Trio A to lesser-known Vietnam war-era protest dances – Lambert-Beatty explores how these performances embodied what Rainer called “the seeing difficulty.” (As Rainer said: “Dance is hard to see.”) Viewed from this perspective, Rainer’s work becomes a bridge between key episodes in postwar art. Lambert-Beatty shows how Rainer’s art (and related performance work in Happenings, Fluxus, and Judson Dance Theater) connects with the transformation of the subject-object relation in minimalism and with emerging feminist discourse on the political implications of the objectifying gaze. In a spectacle-soaked era, moreover – when images of war played nightly on the television news – Rainer’s work engaged the habits of viewing formed in mass-media America, linking avant-garde art and the wider culture of the 1960s. Rainer is significant, argues Lambert-Beatty, not only as a choreographer, but as a sculptor of spectatorship. The MIT Press

Reah delivers brilliant and chilly set pieces. she is a fine writer and her projection of sheer terror is enviable scary.”-The Literary Review “This is a crime novel with a strong element of psychological suspense. it combines the world of modern art with the world of the modern police force. the last fifty pages are nail biting.”-Irish Examiner “Reah is skilled at splicing domestic life with the menace of fear and at creating characters who are vulnerable, intelligent and humane.”-Manchester Evening News (England) Beyond the new city center developments, the old Sheffield canal is overgrown, run down, and deserted. Signs of regeneration creep along its towpaths, including a small innovative gallery housed in one of the warehouses. But between the renovations it’s a dark and lonely place-the perfect site for an exhibition reworking Brueghel’s The Triumph of Death. For Eliza Eliot, the curator, the chance to show well-known artist Daniel Flynn’s work at the gallery is a coup. But when a young woman’s body is found in the canal, Flynn’s nightmare images begin to spill out into the real world. Still affected by the murder of her friend’s daughter four years earlier, Eliza is drawn deep into the violence that seems to surround the gallery. Is this the work of a psychopath, or is there a link between present horrors and the tragedy of four years ago?

Characters of Blood

Characters of Blood

$57.32

Across the centuries, the acts and arts of black heroism have inspired a provocative, experimental, and self-reflexive intellectual, political, and aesthetic tradition. InCharacters of Blood, Celeste-Marie Bernier illuminates the ways in which six iconic men and women?Toussaint Louverture, Nathaniel Turner, Sengbe Pieh, Sojourner Truth, Frederick Douglass, and Harriet Tubman?challenged the dominant conceptualizations of their histories and played a key role in the construction of an alternative visual and textual archive. While these figures have survived as symbolic touchstones, Bernier contends that scholars have yet to do justice to their complex bodies of work or their multifaceted lives. Adopting a comparative and transatlantic approach to her subjects? remarkable life stories, the author analyzes a wealth of creative work?from literature, drama, and art to public monuments, religious tracts, and historical narratives?to show how it represents enslaved heroism throughout the United States, Africa, and the Caribbean. In mapping this black diasporic tradition of resistance, Bernier intends not only to reveal the limitations and distortions on record but also to complicate the definitions of black heroism that have been restricted by ideological boundaries between heroic and anti-heroic sites and sights of struggle.

Charlotte Posenenske

Charlotte Posenenske

$73.72

This generously illustrated volume places German sculptor Charlotte Posenenske’s groundbreaking works from the 1960s firmly within the history of Minimalist sculpture and Conceptual art. A contemporary of Donald Judd, Posenenske is most known for her body of spare, repetitive forms made from industrial materials, corrugated cardboard, pressboard and sheet metal, which she manipulated and bent for public spaces and performative appearances. In the mid-1960s, after producing several series of Abstract Expressionist and Constructivist paintings, Posenenske began the body of work she is most associated with today: the infinitely positionable and site-specific ventilation shaft-like series Square Tubes (1967). She was featured in Documenta 12 in 2007 and her pieces are part of numerous collections, but her work receded from the foreground when she abandoned sculpture in 1968, feeling that art did not have sufficient political impact. Posenenske died in 1985; this monograph secures her legacy.

His dendroid sculptures can be found at various museums and foundations including the Olympic Sculpture Park, Seattle, WA; Wanas Foundation, Knislinge, Sweden; Montenmedio Arte Contemporaneo NMAC, Cadiz, Spain; and the St. Louis Museum of Art, St. Louis, MO. Roxy Paine lives and works in Brooklyn and Treadwell, NY. In his body of work, Roxy Paine mirrors natural processes, drawing increasingly on the tension between organic and man-made environments, between the human desire for order and nature’s drive to reproduce. His highly detailed simulations of natural phenomena include an ambitious series of hand-wrought stainless steel trees, vitrines of mushroom and plant life in various states of decay and several large-scale machines designed to replicate creative processes. Collectively, his works demonstrate the human attempt to impose order on natural forces, depicting the struggle between the natural and the artificial, the rational and the instinctual. Paine is represented by the James Cohan Gallery. Paine began showing his work in Williamsburg, Brooklyn in 1990 and 1991 at an artist run collective called Brand Name Damages (which he helped to found) and he had his first solo exhibition at the short-lived Herron Test-Site in October 1992.
